授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course will enable students to talk confidently in English about a variety of topics.  

The goals of this course are:

To develop students’ ability to use language fluently, accurately and effectively on a wide variety of general, academic, and vocational topics.

To develop students’ ability to communicate spontaneously with good grammar control.

To engage students in extended conversations on a variety of topics.

To develop students’ ability to make effective short presentations in small groups and to the whole class
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Most of the coursework will consist of small group discussions, pair work, and group presentations centered on topics from the textbook. For some units in the textbook, students will be required to prepare a short talk where they can share their experiences, opinions, hopes, and wishes. For these class assignments, feedback will be provided through evaluation sheets from class members and the teacher. Students will also be required to complete written reflections of their own performances. The objective of each class is for students to use English only for the full 100 minutes

事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Preview the textbook before each class: 30 – 60 minutes. Complete weekly homework: 30 - 60 minutes. Every 2 or 3 weeks students will be required to prepare for a short talk or presentation. Preparation time will range from 4 to 6 hours.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed as follows:

Class Participation: 30%: Contributing to group discussions and class activities.
Homework 30%: Preparing and giving short presentations.
Midterm Assessment 20%: Presenting a 3-minute PowerPoint presentation
Final Assessment 20%: Presenting a 4-minute PowerPoint presentation.

In principle, four or more absences will automatically result in a grade of F or X.

1 Course Orientation Introduction to the course content, learning goals and class policies. Ice breaker activities. Prepare a short introduction about you: your major, your interests, etc.
2 Unit 1: The Guy with Green Hair Discussions on the appearance and fashions. Review the vocabulary and complete the homework.
3 Unit 2: The Shoplifter Discussions on the problems with friendships. Create a 3-minute group presentation Prepare for a short a talk on addictions and obsessions.
4 Unit 3: I'm not addicted! Discussions on smartphones over-use. Students give a 2-minute short talk. Review the vocabulary and complete the homework.
5 Unit 4: Social Media Star Discussions on what is important on life to succeed. Information on Midterm Assessment. Review the vocabulary and complete the homework.
6 Unit 5: Who pays? Discussions on dating and gender issues. Review the vocabulary. Prepare for Midterm Assessment.
7 Unit 6: Saying "I love you." Discussing dating and relationships. Students will give a 2-minute short talk Rehearse for Midterm Assessment presentation.
8 Midterm Assessment 3-minute Presentation Complete self reflection on Midterm Assessment presentation.
9 Unit 7: Family values Discussion on marriage and love.. Review vocabulary and complete the homework
10 Unit 8: Cyber Love Discussions on meeting people online. Prepare for a short talk on family values.
11 Unit 9: Visit to Grandma Discussions on age difference and past experiences. Students will give a 2-minute short talk Prepare for the final presentation
12 Unit 10: Fan Worship Discussions on being a fan. Students give a 2-minute short talk. Rehearse final presentation
13 Final Assessment (Group A) Give a 3-minute PowerPoint Presentation based on a topic covered in class Course reflection
14 Final Assessment (Group B) Give a 3-minute PowerPoint Presentation based on a topic covered in class Course reflection
