授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This introductory course covers Japanese history and culture from the 1868 Meiji Restoration onward—necessarily 「広く浅く」 (broad but shallow). We examine major events and trends through the Meiji (1868–1912), Taisho (1912–1926), Showa (1926–1989), Heisei (1989–2019), and Reiwa (2019–present) periods. Periods covered: Meiji Restoration through present day, including modernization, wars, postwar recovery, and contemporary Japan. Class capacity (定員): This popular course may be capped at 40 students. 本講義は、1868年の明治維新以降の日本の歴史と文化を概観する入門コースであり、必然的に「広く浅く」扱います。明治（1868〜1912年）、大正（1912〜1926年）、昭和（1926〜1989年）、平成（1989〜2019年）、令和（2019年〜現在）の各時代の主要な出来事や潮流を検討します。 扱う時代：明治維新から現代まで。近代化、戦争、戦後復興、現代日本を含む。 定員：本講義は人気があり、40名を上限とする場合があります。
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Students will read scholarly and general writings, watch documentaries, take notes, and participate in discussions. The course is conducted primarily in English; no advanced Japanese is required. Students will make an independent visit to Yasukuni Shrine and Yushukan Museum and write a brief report. Assignments: 1–2 short essays (1.5–2.5 pages each), around Week 4 or 9; final report (4–5 pages), due at end of semester. Weekly homework: 1–3 hours (more when essays are due). 学術的な資料・文献を読み、ドキュメンタリーを視聴し、ノートを取り、ディスカッションに参加します。授業は主に英語で行われますが、高度な日本語力は必要ありません。靖国神社と遊就館を独自に見学し、簡単なレポートを作成します。 課題：短いエッセイ1〜2本（各1.5〜2.5ページ）、第4週または第9週頃に出題。期末レポート（4〜5ページ）、学期末提出。毎週の学修時間：1〜3時間（エッセイ提出時はそれ以上）。

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Grading: 33.3% attendance/participation, 33.3% essays, 33.3% final report. Grade Standards: AA=Deep understanding, high originality; A=Average understanding, some originality; B=Below-average, limited originality; C=Minimal understanding; F=No understanding/insufficient attendance. Attendance: Late (within 30 min)="1/3 absent" (3 lates=1 absence). Over 30 min late=absent. 5+ absences=disqualified (Ministry of Education rule). Excused absences (公欠): Send advance email for valid reasons (funeral, interview, illness with doctor's note). Maximum 2 公欠 allowed. 成績配分：出席・参加33.3%、エッセイ33.3%、期末レポート33.3%。 評価基準：AA=深い理解と高い独創性、A=平均的理解といくらかの独創性、B=平均以下の理解、C=最低限の理解、F=理解不足または出席不足。 出席：30分以内の遅刻＝「1/3欠席」（3回で1欠席）。30分以上＝欠席。5回以上欠席＝単位取得不可（文科省規定）。 公欠：正当な理由（葬儀、面接、診断書付き病気等）は事前メールで申請。原則2回まで。
関連科目 ／Related Subjects	My JHC1 (spring) course covers prehistory through Edo period. Both recommended but not required. 私のJHC1（春学期）講座は先史時代から江戸時代を扱います。両方の履修を推奨しますが必須ではありません。
備考 ／Notes	AI Policy: Do not use AI for essays! Penalty up to 20 points; serious cases may result in expulsion. Outstanding work: max. 5 bonus points. AI方針：エッセイにAI使用禁止！違反は最大20点減点、重大な場合は退学処分も考えられる。
