授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
□Course Objectives
AE is a content-based course. Students are expected to develop an understanding of the course topic set by each instructor throughout the semester. As they develop their understanding of the course topic, students will conduct research and present their findings and opinions in writing and/or speaking.
□Content
This course utilizes the integration of reading and writing to explore and apply major critical schools of thought to the relationship between language and societal structure. The aim is to understand the way that language can be used to reinforce and dismantle hierarchical structures in order to expand upon students’ understanding of critical topics.
□Reading & Discussion
・read and evaluate texts in social sciences and humanities
・express oneʼs opinions about the course topic in a discussion constructively
□Individual/Group Projects
・conduct independent research
・present the result of a project effectively in oral or/and written forms in a format designated by the instructor. This may include but is not limited to research paper and presentations.

Class is taught and participated in English.

4 How to Write a Research Paper Introduce research paper assignment and research competencies.
5 Colonialism Explore the effect, purpose, and impacts of erasure of language.
6 Language and Power Introduce concept of privilege and the power power for individual’s whose language aligns with norms
7 Neutrality, Equality, and the Replication of Power Examine the inherent politicization within the concept of neutrality.
8 News and Politics Explore the way that inclusion or omission of different subjects or words can weaponize news.
9 Langauge and Democracy Examine language, epistemic disadvantage, and democratic participation.
10 The Evolution of Language Explore the adaptation and evolution of the English language to account for inclusion or change.
11 Language and Reclaiming Power Explore the way that language can reclaim words or phrases previously associated with oppression.
12 Rough Draft Due First Draft of Research Paper.
13 Presentation 1 Students present PowerPoints of their research papers.
14 Presentation 2/Research Papers Due Students present a powerpoint presentation of their research papers and submit the final draft.
