授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course will explore the idea that words are not just independent units of language; they also combine closely or frequently with other words to form collocations (e.g., "make a suggestion," "intensely personal," "circle of friends"). We will look at collocations from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, discussing questions such as: Why does the use of collocations help us to communicate more naturally and efficiently? What do dictionaries and language corpora tell us about collocations? How can foreign-language learners learn to use collocations appropriately?
The main aims of this course are for students to:
1) gain an understanding of key concepts and themes in collocation research;
2) improve their ability to recognize and use English collocations;
3) develop the practical English skills necessary to participate in group discussions and follow lectures on specialized topics.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Class format will include group discussion of pre-assigned readings, mini-lectures, and oral presentations. Students will be expected to develop their understanding of weekly topics through a guided cycle of reading, writing, listening, and discussion.
*NOTE:
1) Classes will be conducted face-to-face.
2) Weekly preparation is required. Homework instructions will be given at the end of each class, and details will be posted on manaba > Weekly lessons. Feedback for hand-in assignments will be provided in the form of written comments and evaluation (paper-based or digital).
3) In accordance with Dokkyo University's current policy on the use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT), assignments generated or rewritten by AI will not be evaluated for credit.
4) Students must check manaba regularly to find course materials, homework instructions, and announcements from the instructor.
5) Details of the class schedule, assignments, and evaluation will be posted on manaba by Apr. 15.

事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
1) Before class (2 hours): Students must read a passage from the textbook and prepare a written mini-report (summary/comment) or worksheet every week. This preparation will equip you to participate actively in group discussion and follow lectures.
2) After class (2 hours): Students must complete written exercises from the textbook (1 page a week) and review the slides and materials used in class. You will also need to take ample time to prepare oral presentations and write the Final Paper.

*Weekly attendance is expected. Students with five or more absences will not receive credit for this course.
*For the Mid-Term and Final Presentations, students will read a scholarly paper and present part of it in class (small-group presentation).
*For the Final Paper, students will be given a choice of topics related to either the Mid-Term or Final Presentation.

1 Course introduction Students will be given an overview of the content, aims, and requirements of this course. Unit 1 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
2 What is a collocation? Students will develop their understanding of the concept of "collocation." Unit 2 reading and summary/comment (250-300 words)
3 Types of collocations Students will consider collocations from the point of view of strength, frequency, and typicality. Unit 3 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
4 Grammatical categories of collocations Students will consider the significance of a structural approach to collocation classification. Unit 4 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
5 Finding and working on collocations in texts Students will develop an understanding of the treatment of collocations in dictionaries. Unit 5 reading and summary/comment (250-300 words)
6 How collocations vary according to situation Students will consider how register affects the choice of collocations (formal, informal, neutral). Unit 6 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
*Reading for Mid-Term Presentation
7 Metaphor in collocations Students will analyze different patterns of metaphorical/non-metaphorical meaning in collocations. *Prepare oral summary of part of the reading for the Mid-Term Presentation
8 Teaching collocations Students will critically assess potential benefits of teaching collocations in the EFL classroom. Unit 7 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
9 Intensifying and softening adverbs Students will examine the collocational patterns of synonyms to find clues about their meanings. Unit 8 reading and worksheet (preparation for discussion)
