授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course will look into social issues that are commonly covered in global news, such as gender awareness, educational policies, diverse family structures, and world peace & the political intervention. Students will analyze social trends and/or historical events through music, academic and newspaper articles, and critically analyze each topic by focusing on language use.
The main goals of the course are to raise awareness about social matters and world events that influence cultures, to be able to critically read professional reports and newspapers by paying attention to linguistic and non-linguistic biases, and to further prepare students for communicating in an increasingly global society.

授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
The lessons will be constructed in three parts: 1) a preview of topics through learning theory & analyzing lyrics of songs, 2) input of the main ideas through reading & sharing materials, and 3) output through class discussions, formal presentations, and critical analysis of articles. The course aims to promote independent learning, for which students are expected to conduct research and explore social issues every week to deepen their understanding of the modern world. The content may change slightly depending on the class size.

/Before After Study
Before class, students must read article(s) and summarize/analyze the content.
There will be content review quiz and group discussion every time.
After class, students must review the materials learned in class.
They need to prepare thoroughly for the oral presentation/final paper by conducting research.
