授業の目的・内容 /Course Objectives |
The purpose of this course is to help students improve their English reading skills. Through extensive reading, students are expected not only to increase their English vocabulary and grasp the meaning of texts, but also to develop skills such as reading aloud, predicting context before reading, and recognising patterns in paragraphs and text organization. In addition to these reading skills, students will also develop critical reading abilities to understand English texts accurately and in depth. This will help students form their own opinions while learning about various societies and cultures, as well as relevant and timely topics from around the world. |

授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
Basically, this course is conducted in English, but explanations will be provided in Japanese where necessary. In order to learn correct, natural, and authentic English, students are strongly recommended to use an English–English dictionary. Quizzes and tests given in class will be explained, and feedback will be provided either on the spot or in the following class. Generally, these classes will be conducted face-to-face; however, on-demand classes may be used partly to supplement regular classes in cases of unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be announced on manaba. Note: This syllabus may be modified if necessary after the course has started. |

Students are expected to come to class fully (or at least adequately) prepared. At the beginning of each class, a short confirmation test on the previous lesson will be conducted. At the end of the class, instructions for preparation for the next lesson will be provided. As a result, students are required to complete at least 100 minutes of out-of-class study in total. | ||||||||||

The final grade will be based on the following: 15% Preparedness and contribution to classes; 35% Quizzes and writing assignments; and 50% Mid-term and final examinations. |
