授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	Propaganda and media manipulation are nothing new — but technology has changed everything. From WWII posters to today's deepfakes, the techniques remain the same; only the speed and reach have exploded. This course examines how English-language media has been used to shape public opinion across history, and develops the critical thinking skills you need to resist manipulation in the digital age. We will analyze historical propaganda (WWII-era newspapers, posters, and films from both the US and Japan), trace the evolution through television and documentaries, and examine today's fake news and AI-generated content. Students will learn to spot bias, framing, and misinformation — essential skills for anyone living in our era of instant global communication. NOTE: This course is being offered for the last time in Fall 2026. This is your final chance to take it. プロパガンダやメディア操作は今に始まったことではありません。しかし、テクノロジーがすべてを変えました。第二次世界大戦のポスターから今日のディープフェイクまで、手法は同じでも、拡散のスピードと範囲は爆発的に拡大しています。本講義では、英語圏メディアが歴史を通じて世論をどのように形成してきたかを検証し、デジタル時代の操作に抵抗するためのクリティカルシンキング（批判的思考力）を養います。 歴史的プロパガンダ（米国・日本双方の新聞、ポスター、映画）を分析し、テレビやドキュメンタリーへの進化をたどり、現代のフェイクニュースやAI生成コンテンツを検証します。バイアス、フレーミング、誤情報を見抜く力を身につけます。 注：本講義は2026年秋学期をもって開講終了となります。受講できる最後の機会です。
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Each 100-minute class is divided into two parts: • Pre-break (40 min): Review quiz, lecture with videos/examples • Break (10 min) • Post-break (50 min): Group discussion, analysis activities, wrap-up Assignments: Weekly note-taking/summaries; 3 short essays analyzing media examples; final project (presentation or report). Weekly homework: 1-2 hours. To develop critical thinking without AI assistance, phones must be off or face-down during class time (break time excepted). English only during group discussions. 100分の授業は2部構成： ・前半（40分）：復習クイズ、動画・事例を用いた講義 ・休憩（10分） ・後半（50分）：グループディスカッション、分析活動、まとめ 課題：毎週のノート記入・要約、メディア分析の小エッセイ3本、期末プロジェクト（プレゼンまたはレポート）。毎週の学修時間：1〜2時間。 AIに頼らず批判的思考力を養うため、授業中は携帯電話の電源を切るかデスクに伏せること（休憩時間を除く）。グループディスカッションは英語のみ。

事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Before class: Read or view assigned materials (articles, videos, historical documents). After class: Review notes, complete analysis tasks. Assignments include: weekly notes/summaries; 3 short essays (newspaper comparison, documentary analysis, fake news analysis); final project. 授業前：指定資料（記事、動画、歴史的資料）を読む・視聴する。授業後：ノートを復習し、分析課題を完了する。課題：毎週のノート・要約、小エッセイ3本（新聞比較、ドキュメンタリー分析、フェイクニュース分析）、期末プロジェクト。

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Grading: 30% attendance/participation, 30% short essays (3 x 10%), 40% final project. Attendance: 5+ absences = disqualified (Ministry of Education rule). Late (within first 30 min) = "1/3 absent" (3 lates = 1 absence). AI Policy: Do not use AI for essays or projects!
