授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course focuses on art and visual culture of modern Japan from the Meiji Restoration to World War II. We will look at a diverse range of media including prints, photographs, postcards, paintings, satirical illustrations,
and advertisements. What role did these visual materials play in society? How can we interpret them? What
can we learn from them about the development of Japan as a modern nation-state and an empire? We will
discuss images together in class, analyze them in their social and historical context, and make informed
interpretations. In this way, you will practice your visual literacy skills and critical thinking. You will also deepen your understanding of Japan’s and East Asia’s modern history.
