Course Description
This course examines the painting and prints of Edo-period Japan, with particular attention to their social, cultural, and political contexts. Students will study representative works from major painting schools—including the Tosa, Kanō, Rimpa, Literati, and Maruyama–Shijō traditions—as well as works by leading ukiyo-e artists. Through close visual analysis, the course aims to develop students’ ability to recognize defining stylistic characteristics and to interpret artworks within their historical and cultural frameworks.

Course Objectives
By the completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Identify and distinguish the principal genres, styles, and schools of Edo-period Japanese painting and prints
• Explain the defining visual characteristics of these works in a clear and informed manner
• Understand how paintings and prints reflect the social, cultural, and historical conditions of Edo-period Japan
• Analyze artworks as historical and cultural sources that provide insight into Edo-period society, values, and everyday life
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Classes will be conducted through lectures, visual materials, assigned readings, group-based activities, and class discussions. The primary language of instruction is English. Japanese terms and concepts form a central part of the course content, and a small number of supplementary reference materials may be in Japanese; however, lectures and nearly all course materials are provided in English. Course materials will be made available via Manaba.

This course emphasizes active learning. Students will regularly engage in small group activities based on course materials. Group membership will change from week to week, allowing students to work with different classmates. Activities may include collaborative analysis, discussion, and brief sharing of findings with other groups or with the class.

During the semester, one official off-campus class (学外授業) will be conducted at a Tokyo-area museum. Students will visit an exhibition related to the themes and materials studied in class.
