授業の目的・内容 /Course Objectives |
English has become the global language of communication, education, and industry, with an estimated two billion speakers worldwide—non-native users outnumbering native speakers nearly four to one. Unlike other majority languages, the spread of English derives largely from its adoption as an additional language by people across diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Although sometimes described as a “killer language” that marginalizes minority tongues, English has also been localized and diversified, giving rise to distinct varieties collectively known as World Englishes. This course examines the global development and sociolinguistic diversity of English through historical and intercultural perspectives. It approaches English as a shared global resource co-owned by all who use it. The primary aim is to empower students to recognize themselves as legitimate and capable English users who can contribute meaningfully to international communication. To support this goal, the course incorporates Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) activities, including synchronous sessions with partner institutions such as De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines. Through these intercultural exchanges, students will develop, (a) critical cultural awareness, (b) communicative competence, (c) linguistic confidence, and (d) global perspective. |
