授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Students will be able to: 1. Increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary/vocabulary building skills in general 2. Automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge and recognize cohesive devices 3. Develop a better understanding of various styles and purposes of reading material 4. Develop effective reading skills (intensive reading, extensive reading, etc.) 5. Introduce students to authentic texts/outside readers This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese" as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This course will use English as our main language. Students are expected not only to attend but also to contribute to the classroom through exercises, activities, and discussions. Students will acquire skills to comprehend various texts and topics and expand their vocabulary and understanding of the context. Students will also practice their writing skills. Students will receive feedback for their writing assignments from their peers and the instructor. Each student is responsible for subscribing to an online library platform. Students must bring their digital devices (i.e., laptops or tablets) to every class.

事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students are expected to complete weekly reading assignments outside of class. The assigned readings will include a specified number of words and are expected to require at least 90 minutes per week to complete. In addition, students are required to prepare for each class by reading the materials provided in advance. This preparation is expected to take approximately 60 minutes per week so that students can participate actively in class activities and discussions.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Book Reports 10% Quizzes 30% Homework 30 % Exams 30 % As a ground rule, students are allowed up to three absences. Those who miss four or more classes will likely fail the course. Please communicate with the instructor any valid reasons why you have to miss more than four classes.
