授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	Uemura Shoen, Kusama Yayoi, Tokiwa Toyoko… are you familiar with these names? In recent years, some Japanese women artists achieved worldwide fame and recognition for their paintings, installations, and photographs. However, historically, women artists have been on the margins of the art world and faced many obstacles on their path to become professional artists. Painting was a domain of male artists, who used female models to produce paintings of beauties and the nude. How has this situation changed in Japan in the past one hundred years?
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This course is taught in English. In each class, you will read and discuss a text. This class will give you an opportunity to practice your reading skills as well as speaking and writing. You will receive written and oral feedback on your homework and reflection papers. Quizzes will be promptly returned and discussed in class.
