授業の目的・内容 /Course Objectives |
This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary, and vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge 3. To develop comprehension skills for reading materials across different genres and topics. 4. To develop effective reading skills & deciphering academic texts (intensive reading, extensive reading, using visual/lexical & grammatical cues in academic texts) 5. To continue to develop reading strategies to read authentic texts/outside readers 6. To recognize how authors use in-text citations, direct quotations and referencing This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese," as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP. |

授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 /Teaching method and Attention the course |
Each learning unit is made up of 2 classes: one is for an in-depth study of key skills and strategies for reading academic texts, and the other is for practicing applying such skills and strategies to the subsequent reading texts. Students are required to learn how to use the skills and strategies by applying them to each reading text while they read it. Students also have to review continually the skills and strategies, and to expand their vocabularies by studying key words and academic words. ※注意 この授業は基本的にすべての授業回を教室での対面形式で行い、responで出欠を確認します。履修者は病気など正当な理由がある場合を除いて、教室での授業に出席しなければなりません。事後の録画配信は行いませんが、対面授業を補完するためにmanabaによって資料や課題を事前に配信します。履修者はmanabaに配信される資料や課題を授業の前に閲覧して、その指示に従わなければなりません。初回の授業で詳しく説明します。 |

Students will be required to read closely the assigned reading materials before each class, and to review the reading skills and strategies by answering all the questions in the textbook after each class. It will take two hours or over in total to prepare for and review each class. |

Students will be assessed on in-class participation (20%), weekly assignments to be submitted through “manaba” (50%) and term-end exam or paper (30%). | ||||||||||
