授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
[Project Practice in International Communication: Towards Strategic Storytelling] Different forms of organizations worldwide—national and local governments, private companies, and cultural or sporting event organizers—conduct PR activities to enhance their image and global presence. In this course, you will collaboratively explore these challenges, deepening your understanding through discussions and research. You will gain practical problem-solving experience in project management, focusing on specific issues based on your personal interests and career plans.
This course explores links between international communication and (re-)branding, and strategic public relations (PR) and storytelling for global audiences. Students identify key challenges faced by governments, private companies, and event organizers, mainly focused on Japan but open to other countries, and develop feasible solutions through project-based work. Topics include narrative design for culture, cities/regions, and international events, cross-cultural messaging and audience analysis, media and digital strategies, crisis/reputation management, and ethical communication. Commercial products may be explored when they meet ESG/CSR criteria. Collaborative projects will be undertaken by small teams throughout the semester. Hopefully, students will produce a strategic PR proposal featuring clear, creative storytelling and actionable ideas to enhance international communication and global engagement.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
The course format is PBL (Problem/Project-based learning). You advance one project with your team of about 3 students (number varying with the total number of enrollments) towards a solution under the guidance of the instructor and with the assistance of a generative AI, engaging in discussions about your selected theme. It is recommended to bring a laptop or a tablet to work comfortably with teammates for advancing your project. You give presentations twice: one intermediary and the other final, lasting from 10 to 15 minutes. These presentations serve as opportunities for you to receive feedback while observing other presentations to enhance your project, as well as to develop the ability to provide constructive feedback. If you have any questions or encounter obstacles, feel free to seek advice from the instructor in class or on MANABA (also available via email).

Before class, prepare your class participation by collecting examples, data, and other materials to share with your teammates (about 2 hours); afterward, summarize discussions and insights (about 2 hours), approximately 4 hours in total are expected to be spent.
