授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course lays the foundation for a variety of writing styles and purposes such as academic essay writing, work report writing, critical reviews, problem-solution essays and many more. This includes brainstorming ideas for a text, structuring of the text (general and specific information), research, utilising reliable sources and citations, paragraph writing, essay writing, biography writing, plagiarism, editing, review/peer review.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
In this class, you can expect a mix of interactive lectures, guided writing sessions, and peer review workshops to help you improve your skills step by step. We will work together on brainstorming, outlining, and drafting essays, as well as analyzing sample texts to understand structure and style. You'll also get personalized feedback to strengthen your writing, and group activities will help you practice editing and revising. Creative journaling and structured assignments will balance creativity with academic focus, giving you a well-rounded approach to writing. Expect a supportive and engaging environment as you develop your writing abilities.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Before each class, you will complete short preparatory tasks, such as reading sample texts, brainstorming ideas, or answering reflection questions to build a foundation for the day’s lesson. During class, you will actively participate in discussions, group activities, or writing exercises designed to apply these concepts. After class, your tasks will include revising drafts, completing assignments, or practicing specific skills covered in class. Peer feedback may also be part of your work.

1 Introduction Students will introduce themselves in class and confirm the contents of the syllabus. Prepare a self introduction for class.
Read pages 57-60.
2 Unit 8 “Seeing the other side” Students will consider both sides of a current social problem and brainstorm ideas in groups. Do pages 61-62.
Homework on page 63
3 Making an Outline Students will prepare an outline. Do page 64.
Submit written essay to Manaba.
4 Unit 9 “A problem/solution essay (1)" Students will identify  national or international problems and recommend  solutions. Read pages 65-69
Do page 70-71.
5 Unit 10 “A problem/solution essay (2)” Students will consider enironmental issues, brainstorming solutions. Read pages 73-76.
Do pages 79-80.
6 References Students will review how to write citations correctly. Read page 78.
Review units 8,9.and 10.
7 Review Quiz 1 Students will demonstrate their knowledge of units 8,9 and 10. Prepare for the quiz.
Submit written work to the Manaba.
8 Unit 11 “An academic opinion essay (1)” Students will examine the structure of an opinion essay. Read pages 81-83.
Do pages 86-87..
9 Thesis Statement Students will review how to write a thesis statement for an opiinon essay. Do page 88.
Submit written work to the Manaba.
10 Unit 12 “An academic opinion essay (2)” Students will examine an opinion essay about crime in Japan. Read pages 89-93.
Do pages 94-95.
11 Body Paragraphs Students will consider various types of support data Do page 96.
Submit written work to the Manaba.
12 Unit 13 “An academic arguing essay” Students will consider the structure of an essay on the death penalty. Read pages 97-101.
Do pages 102-103.
13 Presenting a Counter-arguement Students will work in groups sharing their ideas. Do pages 104-105.
Do page 106.
14 Review 2 Quiz Students will demonstrate their knowledge of units 11,12 and 13. Prepare for the quiz.
Submit Final essay to the Manaba.
