授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course will focus on developing writing skills by examining various grammatical points and structures to write simple and complex/compound sentences. Then students will focus on writing simple paragraphs. Common mistakes and how to avoid them will be also introduced to the students. Self-help techniques as well as peer checking and reviewing will also be incorporated in this course.

This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be learner-centered with active learning as the main focus of this class. Pair work and group work along with peer editing will be incorporated throughout the course.  Students will be expected to be active participants in this course.  Also, all directed writing assignments will be completed in the allotted classroom time.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will be expected to do the grammar review and keep an English journal throughout the course. Each week, students will be expected to complete 2 pages of free or focused writing in their journal.  This should be approximately 1 hour to 90 minutes of writing each week.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on  journal writing (30%), writing assignments (70%) and mid-term and end-term assessments (10%).

All written work will be returned to the students within 2 weeks of submission.  Students will be able to re-write any work for re-evaluation if the assignment has not met the passing benchmarks established for each assignment.

1 Course Introduction, Self-introduction Writing a self-introduction will be the focus of this class. 2 pages of journal writing will need to be completed for the next class. (1 hour)
2 Sentence structures Students will learn about the subject and predicate parts of a sentence. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class. (1 hour)
3 Nouns, Pronouns, Articles Students will review various types of nouns, pronouns, articles and their usages. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class. (1 hour)
4 Verbs (1) Tenses Students will review the various verb tenses. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class. (1 hour)
5 Verbs (2) Passive Voice Students will review when and how the passive voice is used. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class. (1 hour)
6 Verbs (3 ) Modals Students will review the various modals used and their differences. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class. (1 hour)
7 Connecting Ideas / Mid-term Assessment Students will review conjunctions and have a written or on-line grammar-based assessment. 4 pages of journal writing. (2 hours)
8 Clauses (Adjective and Noun) Differentiation of clauses and phrases and their usages will be reviewed. 2 pages of journal writing and grammar review worksheets for the next class.  (1 hour)
9 Topic Sentences Topic sentences will be the focus of this class. 3 pages of journal writing for the next class. (90 minutes)
10 Main ideas and supporting details Students will examine the importance of supporting details in a paragraph. 3 pages of journal writing for the next class. (90 minutes)
11 Descriptive Paragraphs Students will work in groups describing objects using adjectives and then write about them. 3 pages of journal writing for the next class. (90 minutes)
12 Comparison / Contrast Paragraphs Students will compare ways of transportation or sports and the write about them. 3 pages of journal writing for the next class. (90 minutes)
13 Key Words and Summary Writing Isolating key words in paragraphs and writing summary sentences. Journal submission. Read current event articles in the English newspaper. (1 hour)
14 Consolidation / Final Assessment Focus on sentence structure and summarizing articles in one to two sentences. Begin writing in Journal for second term. (1 hour)
