授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
Students will continue to develop their communication skills, with a focus on listening and speaking, in this course. To accomplish this, weekly topics will be introduced so students can continue to build their vocabulary and use idiomatic phrases correctly. Listening practices will focus on various topics relevant to today's global society.  Students will also be exposed to different speaking and listening strategies and exercises used in various qualification examinations.

*This is a required course as stated within the curriculum guidelines for graduation from the Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term. Due to the active nature of this class, on-line participation or "make-up" papers to be done outside of class will not be accepted.

Voice recognition software as well as on-line supplementary activities will be used by the student.

事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will be expected to expand their vocabulary and focus on individual speaking exercises outside of the classroom.  Students will be expected to listen to some form of English each day for 5 to 10 minutes outside of class.  For successful completion of this course, it is expected that approximately 60 to 90 minutes each week should be spent completing the LMS assignments and expanding vocabulary.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on weekly conversation tasks, homework, reflection sheets and vocabulary quizzes (50%), mid-term assessment (25%), and end-term assessment (25%).

On-line assignments will be given each week.  Students will be expected to complete these tasks for successful completion of the course.

Students will receive weekly feedback on their work and participation in class through the reflection sheets.

/Before After Study
1 Orientation, Course Guidelines, Summer Memories Students will review the syllabus and talk in pairs and groups about their summer holidays. Students will review vocabulary for Unit 7: Food and Drink.
2 Unit 7:  Food and Drink Students will learn about food and drink customs in various cultures.   Students will examine SDG #2 and UNESCO cultural heritage food items.
3 The Environment of Food Students will explain rules and customs of food around the world. Students will complete online tasks for Unit 7 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 8.
4 Unit 8: Travel Students will examine different ways to talk about travel and promote tours. Students will prepare group presentations on travel destinations.
5 Descriptions Students will work on describing various photos of tourists and tourist destinations. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 8 and prepare for Unit 9.
6 Unit 9: Education Emphasis on follow-up questions will be the focus of this lesson. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 9 and prepare for the mid-term.
7 Mid-term Assessment Oral and written mid-assessments will be conducted. Students will prepare vocabulary for Unit 10.
8 Unit 10: Health Students will practice giving advice with the use of modals. Students will review how to give advice and opinions in various situations.
9 What do you think? Students will examine different ways of giving advice and stating their opinions. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 10 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 11.
10 Unit 11: Numbers and Prices Students will practice saying and using large numbers. Students will review large numbers.
11 Statistics, graphs, data Students will practice using various numbers to describe statistics, graphs, and data. Students will complete online tasks for Unit 11 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 12.
12 Unit 12:  People Students will practice ways to sympathize and empathize with others in English. Students will begin to review material covered in the course.
13 Verbal and Non-verbal communication Different kinds of communication will be discussed. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 12 and prepare for the final assessment.
14 Consolidation and Assessment Oral and written end-term assessments will be conducted. Students will continue to develop the skills acquired in the course through listening activities.
