授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	The aim is to give students a course in “film and and American culture”, as they might experience at a university in an English speaking country. The course examines American culture and society through film. Time will be spent in class watching and critically analyzing films, as a window onto American culture and society. The two themes covered in the autumn semester are: “The American Dream in American cinema” and “Social Justice in American Cinema". We will watch films from a variety of genres and eras in relation to these two themes. Each film will be watched in its entirety over two weeks, and will be shown in class in English without Japanese subtitles. The films provided on the schedule are a tentative list and may be changed during the course. This course focuses on improving students’ "listening" and "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English," as stated in DP, 2. Overall objectives are "to obtain a comprehensive English proficiency," as stated in the CP.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This course will be taught face-to-face, though all course materials are provided on a website from which you can also watch the films. Students are expected to spend time out of the class watching the films each week.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Reading articles related to the films and course themes (x5) (30 minutes). Watch the films outside of class via the course website (1 hour each week). Make short videos with the Flipgrid app after watching each film (x5). Write film review sheets (x5) (1 hour). Complete the Independent Study report at the end of the course (2 hours).
