/Course Objectives
Differences across Englishes worldwide go beyond just vocabulary and pronunciation. In this class, we will look at how English varies worldwide and at issues that affect language usages, such as age, gender, and class. The difference among countries as well as within countries will be considered. Additional topics will include the treatment of bilingualism in the English-speaking world and language standards. This course examines how social relationships and structures influence language and vice versa. It looks at language variations determined by region, sex, social level, and cultural groupings. The course is intended to encourage students to think about language issues in their own lives and to help them establish positions in the light of the findings of sociolinguistic research. In this course, you will attain an advanced understanding of the sociocultural nature of human language. Language may be studied at several structural or functional levels (such as phonology or syntax, for example). However, your attention in this course will be directed to the components of society and culture and the relationships between these components and language variation within and across individuals. You will also be encouraged in the class to carefully examine your beliefs about your own language and your attitudes toward the language varieties you and others use. Doing so will help you better understand the change that language constantly undergoes in personal and social use. Examining your beliefs and attitudes will also help you become more aware of the variation in language use

/Teaching method and Attention the course
Students will be able to understand how English varies according to social context, including class, gender, and culture. Students will be able to explain how language, whose primary function is to serve as an instrument of communication, serves secondarily to help establish aspects of the social identity of its speakers. They will be able to list aspects of social identity that correlate with linguistic identity—national, ethnic, class, geographical, sexual, educational—and give specific examples of how these aspects of social identity are supported or reinforced by language use. Students will be able to explain the status of geographical variations in a language—dialects, as well as the social equivalent of such variation. They will gather data from their own speech and that of their families and peers, of how individual speakers switch among varieties, and report on these examples to the class. Students will be able to give specific examples of how a large portion of the world’s pop
