授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
The goal of this course is to refine the writing skills the students have developed in their previous writing courses to write academic essays. The aim is that by the end of the course students should be able to develop their arguments to produce clear and coherent pieces of writing. This will involve drafting and redrafting your work.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This is a practical course in writing conducted as a workshop. The textbook serves as a workbook. We will study models of writing analyzing writing in terms of words, sentences, paragraphs and essays. You will focus on how to select information and how to use it to support your own ideas. We will discuss how to use other people’s opinions and information and present it in an acceptable way. In class we will work through exercises in the textbook, some of which will be set as homework for preparation and others assigned to be completed at home. Longer assignments will be collected and feedback given in written comments. At the same time there will be continual feedback during classroom discussions.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
We will cover, on average, one topic per week so you need to read each unit (6 pages) before class and prepare your answers to the designated exercises in the textbook. Each unit will end with a writing assignment to be completed after class and handed in the following week (2 hours).
