授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase their vocabulary and strategies for grasping meaning of vocabulary in texts 2. To review grammar and cohesive devises 3. To develop basic reading skills and strategies (pre-reading, during reading and after reading strategies) 4. To develop comprehension strategies to understand reading materials without translating them into Japanese 5. To clarify the structure of a paragraph or essay (dependent on the level of the students) This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "reading" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills," as stated in the CP.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	The course will help students to develop their reading strategies and to become better readers. The course uses an extensive reading approach based on the themes from the textbook. Students read from the textbook in class and do their own independent reading at home. At the beginning of every class, students collaborate together and teach each other about what they have learned. These extra reading worksheets are graded by the teacher every week and feedback for improvements are given. Students will also study vocabulary related to the readings and complete 3 in class tests. Class time is also devoted to reading strategies practice and discussion. Classes will take place face to face on campus. No special applications or tools are required.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Complete your extra reading worksheet every week. This will help you to teach your classmates about what you have read at the beginning of every class. The task should take 30-40 minutes. Study the new words from the readings in preparation for your 3 tests (10-15 minutes).

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Students will be assessed using class participation (30%), vocabulary tests (20%), outside readings (40%) and a final assignment (10%).
