授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students.
Overall Objectives
1. To increase their vocabulary and strategies for grasping meaning of vocabulary in texts
2. To review grammar and cohesive devises
3. To develop basic reading skills and strategies (pre-reading, during reading and after reading strategies)
4. To develop comprehension strategies to understand reading materials without translating them into Japanese
5. To clarify the structure of a paragraph or essay (dependent on the level of the students)

This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "reading" skills, as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills," as stated in the CP.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course is taught in English. Classes will be conducted using the textbook listed below. Students are required to purchase the textbook before the first class from stores such as the university bookstore DUO.

Feedbacks will be given verbally and or in writing whenever deemed necessary, especially after in-class exercises.

Porta II and University Web-Mail System will be used as the essential tools of communication. Students are expected to prepare an appropriate Internet environment to use these tools constantly.

Including the first class, classes will be conducted in a face-to-face environment only. However, depending upon the situation surrounding COVID-19, the format of classes may change.
科目の特性上、授業は対面形式のみで行います。なお、新型コロナウイルス感染症の感染状況により社会情勢や大学の方針等が変化した場合には、授業形式を変更する可能性があります。
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students are expected to prepare for each class by reviewing relevant materials provided by the instructor. Students are expected to spend around 2 hours for this process.

評価方法

Evaluations will be made according to participation (10%), short assignments (10%), midterm examination (40%), and final examination (40%). Details will be announced by the instructor in the first class.
