授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course aims to develop students’ ability to comprehend academically-oriented lectures, in addition to interviews and discussions, from a variety of different fields. In order to accomplish this, students will build their academic vocabulary, practice effective note-taking strategies, learn about how lectures are typically organized, and develop their critical thinking skills.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be conducted in both face-to-face and on-demand formats. Students will spend the majority of time in class doing listening activities, but activities that aim to build other skills such as writing and speaking will also be undertaken. Students will also use a Learning Management System (LMS) such as MyDOC or manaba to download and upload assignments. Students will also be able to receive feedback on their assignments on the LMS.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students can expect to spend approximately 1 hour per week doing pre- and post-listening assignments. This will apply to both in-person and on-demand lessons. Assignments will be submitted in class or to the LMS. If students are absent, it is their responsibility to check if there were any assignments and complete them by the same deadline as other students.

1 Introduction to the course The instructor will go over the syllabus and explain the guidelines for the course Students will preview the vocabulary for the listening activity next week.
2 Unit 1 Behavioral Science (consumer behavior) Students will listen to an interview about consumer behavior. Students will write their opinions about the listening passage.
3 Behavioral science (the decoy effect) Students will watch a video about the decoy effect. Students will answer a questionnaire about shopping habits.
4 Behavioral science (gender and shopping) Students will listen to a lecture about gender and shopping. Students will practice basic note-taking strategies.
5 Unit 2 Biology (film contest) Students will listen to a panel about a film contest. Students will preview the vocabulary for next week's listening.
6 Biology (turtles) Student will watch a video about turtles under threat. Students will state their opinions about the video in written format.
7 Biology (epiphytes) Students will listen to a conversation on campus about plants. Students will create and administer a short questionnaire.
8 Unit 3 Sociology (reasons for migration) Students will listen to a lecture about migration. Students will watch online videos about migration.
9 Sociology (Ellis Island) Students will watch a video about what Ellis Island means today. Students will take an online tour of Ellis Island.
10 Sociology (colonization of space) Students will listen to a study group discussion about space colonization. Students will learn strategies for discussions.
11 Unit 4 Earth science (Madagascar) Students will listen to an earth sciences lecture. Students will continue learning about note-taking strategies.
12 Earth science (Colorado River) Students will watch a video about a river. Students will learn about the geography of the western US.
13 Earth science (ecotourism) Students will listen to a conversation about selecting a college and their major. Students will write their opinions about the listening passage in the textbook.
14 Consolidation and assessment   Students will do a brief review of the semester's material and complete a final assessment. Students can gauge the level of their listening skills and study independently based on that.
