授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
NOTE:IN ANTICIPATION OF NEW EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM OVERSEAS ENROLING THIS COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME, I HAVE MODIFIED THE COURSE SCHEDULE TO PROVIDE THE NEW STUDENTS WITH A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF THE JAPANESE POETRY. AS A RESULT, SOME OF THE CONTENTS IN THE FALL SEMESTER WOULD BE THE SAME AS IN THE PREVIOUS SPRING SEMESTER BUT IN DIFFERENT APPROACHES AND PERSPECTIVES. IN CASE THERE WILL BE NO EXCHANGE STUDENTS, THE COURSE SCHEDLE SHOULD REMAIN THE SAME AS ORIGINALLY ANNOUNCED: FOCUS ON THE PERIOD FROM THE MEIJI REVOLUTION TO THE PRESENT DAYS.

Students will follow the 1500 year history of the Japanese poetry from Manyoshu to the contemporary free style verses, while gaining insights about the Japanese culture, language, emotional and psychological characteristics, religion, and the changes in the social dynamics, including:
● Development of the Japanese writing system
● Womens’ position in Heian era and their contribution to its literature
● Traditional sensitivity of Monono Aware, Wabi-Sabi and Okashi
● Dynamism between Chinese influence and Japanese indigenous culture
● Practice of harmony and collaboration in the Japanese art
● Development of the Free-style, Spoken-language poetry in Meiji era
● Censorship on and resistance by the Japanese poets during WWII
● Post WWII Japan as depicted in the contemporary poetry
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course is basically conducted in the classroom on a face to face base.

The class activities will include reading poem texts in the original Japanese along with the English translation, discussion, and workshops for Haiku, Tanka and Renga. Students are expected to actively participate in the class discussion and share the knowledge and experiences of the class topics in her own cultural background.
