授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
Monsters in Japanese Popular Culture: From oral traditions and folklore to modern mass-market media, monsters are as much about how we define ourselves as they are about how we circumscribe and contain the other. They can take many forms: horrific or beautiful, tangible or immaterial, gentle or violent. They can represent our fantasies and desires as much as our fears and anxieties.

In this course we will study a range of examples from anime and manga, movies and literature, even popular music and fashion. Students will analyze monsters in Japanese popular culture with a focus on the sociocultural and historic contexts that have given rise and popularity to specific forms and functions. Major assignments will include a short critical essay and a final presentation.「講義はすべて英語で行います。TOEIC 700、TOEFL(IBT) 71、英検準一級程度以上の英語力を必要とします。」
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Each week we will study a different example of the role of monsters in popular culture. First, we will look at and discuss specific examples. Then, we will complete a short in-class reading. We will review for comprehension and answer questions. Finally, students will complete in-class activities around the theme for the day. These will include student-driven small group discussions, analysis, problem solving and presentations. Feedback will be provided in class and in writing. Note that the teaching method, text material covered, and assessment style may change due to the demands of the ongoing health situation. Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class.

This class will meet in person. If this changes, the instructor will provide information via Manaba Course News. Contact the instructor promptly if you anticipate being absent or are unable to attend a class for any reason.
