授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This course will examine various comparison theories and methods of comparison when studying societies and cultures. So-called "Pillars of Society" will be discussed and topics and themes found within these pillars will be introduced. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of comparative studies and how they can be utilized in their future studies.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This course will be lecture-based. Students will be asked to actively participate in small group discussions within the classroom and share and exchange ideas with each other. Interactive media as well as various types of visual materials will be included to help engage students in the classroom. This course will be conducted in English and in general in the classroom only.  ZOOM will be used ONLY if requested by the university to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Otherwise, students will be expected to be in the classroom each week. *In consideration of the health and well-being of the instructor and students, discussions may be limited in nature.   **EDMODO.COM will be used for quizzes and some assignments.  Instruction for the use of the application will be given in the first lecture.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students will be given supplemental readings for the main themes introduced in the class. Vocabulary worksheets as well as review sheets to be completed during the lecture will be given to students prior to the lectures, and reflection sheets will be collected after each lecture. Students will be required to do on-line work outside of the classroom.

1	Introduction / Overview of course	Course syllabus and guidelines will be discussed.	Students will review vocabulary words for the first lecture. (60 minutes)
2	Introduction to Comparative Studies	Comparative Theories will be introduced.	Students will review comparative theories and prepare vocabulary for the next lecture.  (90 minutes)
3	Comparative Methods	Comparative methods will be introduced.	Students will summarize comparative methods and review vocabulary for the next lecture. (90 min)
4	"Pillars of Society"	An introduction to the so-called "Pillars of Society" will be introduced in this lecture.	Students will summarize the "Pillars of Society" and review words for family relationships.
5	Family - 1	The definition of family will be discussed.	Students will read an article from the suggested reading list. (90 minutes)
6	Family - 2	Non-traditional family types will be discussed.	Students will review the first lectures for a mid-term assessment.  (90 minutes)
7	Raising Children / Mid-term assessment	Raising children and what we can learn from the various cultural differences will be discussed.	Students will ask peers about dating preferences for the next lecture.  (60 minutes)
8	Dating	Dating customs and styles across the cultures will be introduced.	Students will investigate marriage customs around the world. (90 minutes)
9	Marriage / Divorce	Marriage / Civil Unions / Non-traditional unions will be discussed as well as divorce.	Students will review vocabulary for education topics and read an article. (90 minutes)
10	Education - 1	Pre-school and elementary education will be discussed.	Students will research various countries' educational examination systems. (90 minutes)
11	Education - 2	Junior high school and high school education will be the topic of discussion.	Students will research issues of minorities and diversity in societies. (90 minutes)
12	Education - 3	Issues in education will be introduced with a focus on diversity in society.	Students will write a reflection paper on ways to reduce discrimination in the classroom. (90 min)
13	Sports	Cultural differences in sports athletes and spectators will be presented.	Students will prepare for group presentations. (120 minutes)
14	Consolidation of the First Term	Topics introduced in the term will be presented in groups.	Students will prepare for the final assessment and review notes from the first term. (90 minutes)
