授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to improve students’ reading skills to help them comprehend English passages effectively and accurately. Students are also expected to develop their reading ability through both speed-reading and intensive reading. In addition, they will get used to reading various types of English passages such as newspaper articles, short essays, and books, and build vocabulary throughout the course. This course helps students achieve the high level of English proficiency stated in the department’s DP (Diploma Policy).
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
・Lessons are held face-to-face in the classroom; however, classes might be switched to online distance learning (e.g. Zoom) due to changes in the COVID-19 situation.
・This course focuses on speed reading & intensive reading.
・Lessons are basically conducted in English, but Japanese might be used when necessary. Students are expected to use English as much as they can in class.
・It is important to read the pages of the course book “Factfulness” that will be covered in each lesson, in advance.
・It is also crucial to make a report for the pages you are assigned and prepare to answer any questions you might receive from your classmates. Everyone will be required to make a report for the assigned pages of Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 during the course; thus, you need to submit a report 4 times in total. In the first lesson (orientation), you will find out your assigned pages.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Preparation (2 hours): You are required to make a report for the assigned pages in each chapter (Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4). This assignment will be 30% of your grade.

Review (2 hours):You are expected to read the pages covered in each lesson again to expand your vocabulary. Also, you are encouraged to use "Quizlet" to work on vocabulary. A vocabulary test will be administered after each completed chapter. Details about testing style and what pages are covered in each test will be given in class.
