授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
Students will continue to develop their listening and speaking skills in this course, with the main focus of developing listening skills and strategies. In order to accomplish this, weekly topics will be introduced so students can continue to build their vocabulary and use idiomatic phrases correctly. Listening practices will focus on various topics relevant to today's global society.
Students will also be exposed to different speaking and listening strategies and exercises used in various qualification examinations.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be learner-centered and active in nature. Students will spend the majority of the class time in doing pair work speaking and listening activities. Students will be expected to give presentations on various topics throughout the term.

*This class will be in general conducted in the classroom.  ZOOM will be used ONLY if requested by the university to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Otherwise, students will be expected to be in the classroom each week. ZOOM classes will not be recorded due to the active nature of the class.
**In order to ensure the safety and health of both instructor and students, more emphasis on listening strategies will be placed in the classroom.  Time will be given to each student to work individually with the instructor in a safe environment throughout the term.  
***Voice recognition software as well as on-line supplementary activities will be used by the student.

事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will be expected to expand their vocabulary and focus on individual speaking exercises outside of the classroom.  Activities for vocabulary expansion, grammar review, as well as listening practice will be assigned each week through the publisher's online supplementary activities and review.

For successful completion of this course, it is expected that approximately 60 to 90 minutes each week should be spent completing the LMS assignments and expanding vocabulary.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on weekly conversation tasks, homework, reflection sheets and vocabulary quizzes (50%), mid-term assessment (25%), and end-term assessment (25%).

On-line assignments will be given each week.  Students will be expected to complete these tasks for successful completion of the course.

/Before After Study
1 Orientation, Course Guidelines, Summer Memories Students will review the syllabus and talk in pairs and groups about their summer holidays. Students will review vocabulary for Unit 7.
2 Unit 7:  How are we feeling today? Students will examine ways to give advice with health as the focus. .Students will complete online tasks for Unit 7.
3 Unit 8:  How did it happen? Students will work on highlighting important information through intonation and stress. Students will complete online tasks for Unit 8.
4 Unit 9:  can I take a message? Shared sounds will be the focus.  Students will practice writing down messages. Students will complete online tasks for Unit 9.
5 Unit 10:  Have you done this before? Students will examine casual English forms and when to use them. Students will work on vocabulary for jobs and professions.
6 The World of Work Students will work on answering interview questions used for job applications. Students will review the use of the present perfect tense and complete the online tasks for Unit 10.
7 Mid-term assessment Oral and written assessments will be conducted. Students will review material from the first half of the term and prepare Unit 11 vocabulary.
8 Unit 11:  It's the best movie of the year Review of linking sounds will be the focus.  Students will practice telling Japanese folk tales. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 11 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 12.
9 Unit 12:  How do you work this? Intonation and rhythm will be the focus for this class through reading and giving instructions. Students will practice reading instructions and giving instructions on how to do things.
10 Cool Japan Intonation and rhythm will be the focus for this class.  Students will explain cool Japanese objects Students will complete online tasks for Unit 12 and prepare vocabulary for Unit 13.
11 Unit 13:  Did you see the paper? Weak forms and using various kinds of numbers will be the focus of this class. Students will review Unit 13 and complete online tasks for this unit.
12 Unit 14:  Things have changed Weak forms and describing changes that have occurred in the past 3 years will be the focus. Students will review Unit 14 and prepare for a group presentation on changes they have experienced.
13 What has changed ... what has not ... Presentation skills will be the focus of this class as students give group presentations. Students will complete all online tasks for Unit 14 and prepare for their final assessment.
14 Consolidation and Assessment Oral and written end-term assessments will be conducted. Students will continue to develop the skills acquired in the course through listening activities.
