授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
Culture, Games and Play: This course will examine the significance of play and games in our lives and the lives of people around the world. All cultures exhibit some form of play. We use games and play to relax, but also to socialize, to make meaning, to learn and compete and even to negotiate our ideals and values.

In this class students will survey examples of games and types of play from around the world, with an emphasis on the sociocultural, economic, and historic dimensions that make games and play such a rich and diverse domain of human experience. Key assignments will include two short essays and a final project in which students will document learning to play a new game.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Each week we will study a different example of the role of games and play in culture and society. First, we will introduce a theme for the day. Then, we will look at and discuss specific examples. Then, we will complete a short in-class reading. We will review for comprehension and answer questions. Finally, students will complete in-class activities around the theme for the day. These will include student-driven small group discussions, analysis, problem solving and presentations. Feedback will be provided in class and in writing. Note that the teaching method, text material covered, and assessment style may change due to the demands of the ongoing health situation. Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class.

This class will meet in person. If this changes, the instructor will provide information via Manaba Course News. Contact the instructor promptly if you anticipate being absent or are unable to attend a class for any reason.
