授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students.
Overall Objectives
1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary/vocabulary building skills in general
2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge and recognize cohesive devices
3. To develop a better understanding of various styles and purposes of reading material
4. To develop effective reading skills (intensive reading, extensive reading, etc.)
5. To introduce students to authentic texts/outside readers

授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
The method used for this course is active learning. Therefore, despite the fact that this course is a reading class that will focus on reading skills, participation in English  is heavily emphasized and expected. There will be discussions an writing assignments  based on the reading texts that students will be expected to complete successfully.  
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will be expected to keep and maintain a class notebook, read and re-read passages, take notes and complete writing assignments. Students will often be asked to prepare for discussions about the text as well which will occasionally require some outside preparation as well. Students will also be asked to study and prepare for vocabulary quizzes.
