授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students.
Overall Objectives
1. To increase their vocabulary and strategies for grasping meaning of vocabulary in texts
2. To review grammar and cohesive devises
3. To develop basic reading skills and strategies (pre-reading, during reading and after reading strategies)
4. To develop comprehension strategies to understand reading materials without translating them into Japanese
5. To clarify the structure of a paragraph or essay (dependent on the level of the students)

This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar" and "reading" skills, as stated in DP 2.
Overall objectives are for them to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills," as stated in the CP.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Students practice reading in English while learning about a variety of engaging topics. The course also focuses on improving students' reading skills and communication skills, in addition to expanding students’ vocabulary and knowledge. Students will have the chance to do their own outside reading every week, and to share what they have learned with the classmates. In addition, students will develop their research skills and communication skills by completing several assignments during the course.

This is a face to face course. Classes will take place on campus. You have to attend the first class on campus. We may use Zoom during the semester if necessary, depending on the situation.

事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will study the new words related to the themes and topics.  Students will also practice their reading skills by completing extra or outside readings every week. Students will pursue their own research to prepare for their mini projects in class.

Students will be assessed using class participation (20%), a reading journal (30%), outside readings (30%) and assignments (20%).

Students should buy a notebook to use as their class journal. This journal will be graded.
