授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This course will explore the idea that words are not simply independent units of language; they also combine closely or frequently with other words to form "collocations" (e.g. make a suggestion, circle of friends, marked improvement). We will look at collocations from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, considering questions such as: Why does the use of collocations help us to communicate more naturally and efficiently? What do dictionaries and language corpora tell us about collocations? How can foreign-language learners learn to use collocations effectively? The main aims of this course are for students to: 1) gain an understanding of key concepts and themes in collocation research, and 2) improve their ability to recognize and use English collocations.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Class format will include mini-lectures, discussion of pre-assigned readings and/or questions, and student presentations. Written outlines will be provided for the mini-lectures. Students will be expected to develop their understanding of each lecture topic through a guided cycle of reading, listening, discussion, and writing. *Please note: 1) In principle, half of the classes will be held on campus (face-to-face), and the other half will be conducted online using a combination of live Zoom lessons and materials/instructions on manaba. Detailed information about class format, including the schedule for face-to-face and online classes, will be posted on the manaba site for this course by Sept. 27. 2) This course will use manaba to post materials and instructions for weekly classes, collect assignments, and provide feedback to students. Students are required to check manaba on a regular basis. 3) Written evaluation and feedback will be provided for hand-in assignments.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students will be required to read a short passage and complete written exercises from the textbook before class every week (total: 2 pages). This preparation will equip students to follow mini-lectures and participate actively in group discussion. In order to keep up with class from week to week, students will also need to take ample time to review course materials, including lecture notes and handouts.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Class participation 20%, Homework and hand-in assignments 30%, Mid-term Writing Assignment 20%, Final Presentation/Final Paper 30% *For the Final Presentation/Final Paper, students will do a small-scale research project on a course-related topic and present the results in both oral and written form. *Weekly attendance is expected. Students with five or more absences will not receive credit for this course.
