授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
In this course, we will take a look at the cultural history and background of American comic books. In class, students will improve their critical thinking and discussion skills through a closer look at American comic book culture. How are American and Japanese comic books different? What are the cultural and historical influences
that have resulted in these differences? Each week, students will learn about a different aspect of U.S. comic book culture while discussing and presenting on influences such as immigration, censorship, gender, and fan culture and activism. Students are required to keep reflection notes for class discussion. In-class assignments and short quizzes will also be given to assess progress and comprehension.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This is a four skills course in which students will prepare for discussion each week with a review of the target
language and vocabulary and reflection journals based on readings, lectures, and short films. Students are highly encouraged to use new vocabulary learned in previous classes in written reflections, which will function as a jumping off point for discussion. Vocabulary quizzes and group activities and presentations will also be assigned to reinforce language and discussion skills. Students will be assessed on effort.
