授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course introduces students who have an intermediate level of proficiency in English to the dynamics of
debate. Students can expect to learn how to formulate opinions on issues related to values and opinions,
express their ideas within the format of a debate and refute the argumentation of others. Through various task students will learn how to develop critical thinking skills. In-class reading & writing activities will help students
develop skills necessary for researching & organizing a successful debate. Students will also have the
opportunity to observe various kinds of debate associated with the West. Upon completion of this course,
students should be able to debate issues
that are familiar to them and be able to continue on to Debate II.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Classroom time will be utilized by having students present their ideas from assigned readings, and will collectively
establish formal debate topics for our classroom debates. This class will call on students to take an active role in
the development of tall class activities. Students will need to contribute to their utmost.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students need to prepare for class discussions by researching the topic and by gaining a full understanding of it in advance of class. They will also need to formulate their opinions and shape them for presentation.

Students are evaluated according to (1) their participating in group debates (50%), (2) completion of classroom tasks (25%), and (3) preparation for debate (25%).
