授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This one-term, twice-a-week required class helps first-year students to learn how to improve their English language communication skills by introducing the organizational skills necessary to become a more competent speaker and writer.
Overall Objectives
1. To help students to develop a basic knowledge of the skills required for organizing a speech and developing speech writing skills
2. To give students maximum opportunities to develop their speech delivery and speech writing skills
3. To build student confidence in speech communication in small and larger group contexts

Please do homework assignments as soon as possible (the same day; or the next day). Waiting until the last minute to do assignments/homework (‘ichiyazuke’) is NOT a good way to prepare for classes.

/Evaluation
The instructor will use the ongoing assessment technique. You will be assessed often, on: how well you participate in class; how well you speak and elaborate (explain) in English, the ways in which you reason (think); how well you use the information taught to you; how well you work together with other class members; and so on.

Your grade will be tentatively determined by: ongoing class assessments (approximately 35%); class participation (20%); and homework/test(s)/presentations (45%).

2 Hallowe'en: history & customs. Hallowe'en: history & customs. (Perhaps including Hadrian's Wall/Guy Fawkes.)
3 Polite questioning & polite answering, in English. Practice with polite questioning & polite answering, in modern English.
4 Researching Christmas in various countries. Assignment of Christmas customs in various countries (for a class presentation).
5 Preparation time:pair presentations. How to order. Preparation time for pair presentations. How to book/order flights/food/tickets/etc.
6 PRACTICE with Restaurant ordering/etc., in English Pair practice with Restaurant ordering/flight-booking/etc., in English.
7 Thanksgiving: history;& usual Thanksgiving customs Thanksgiving: history; and usual Thanksgiving customs, in North America.
8 Thanksgiving song-listening exercise. Thanksgiving song-listening exercise, with cultural awareness questions.
