授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This one-term required class teaches second-year students how to read more effectively and then presents them with the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions successfully in group and class discussions while working with topical subjects.
Overall Objectives
1. To teach students the skills involved in effective group discussion
2. To improve reading comprehension skills using topical reading material
3. To develop verbal reasoning skills together with the ability and opportunity to communicate their thoughts related to the topics and readings provided
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
We are planning on having face-to-face lessons at Dokkyo.
If this is unavailable, we will switch to zoom lessons with handouts posted on PortaII website. In this case, some aspects of the syllabus will need to be changed, but the core concepts of the class will remain the same.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Before class, students are required to read all handouts and articles assigned. After class, students are required to do all homework tasks set (write introductions, do research, have group meetings, etc.)

1 Introduction – Discussion Procedure Students will understand the requirements of the course, classroom policy, and discussion procedure. Post - Read handouts, study for quiz.
2 Career Choice: Ranking & Identifying Factors We will go over the requirements for the first assignment, form groups, and have a class discussion. Post - Read handouts.
3 Choosing a Topic / Discussion Steps We will discuss how to choose a topic and go through the discussion script writing procedure. Post - Complete discussion script.
4 Practice Presentations and Peer Feedback Students will take turns leading their group in discussions based on their scripts. Post - Finalize script and prepare for class presentation.
5 Discussion Presentations Students will present their group discussions for evaluation. Pre - Practice discussion in groups.
Post - Read handouts and study for quiz.
6 Cosmetic Surgery: Opinion / Discussion Steps We will discuss the requirements and outline for the next assignment. Post - Read handouts and choose a topic.
7 Agreeing and Disagreeing with Opinions We will focus on script writing and have a group discussion. Post - Prepare rough script.
8 Practice Presentations and Peer Feedback Students will take turns leading their group in discussions based on their scripts. Post - Finalize script and prepare for class presentation.
9 Discussion Presentations Students will present their group discussions for evaluation. Pre - Practice discussion in groups.
Post - Read handouts and study for quiz.
10 Environment: Problem Solving / Discussion Steps We will discuss the requirements and outline for the next assignment. Post - Read handouts and choose a topic.
11 Identifying Causes and Solutions We will focus on script writing and have a group discussion. Post - Prepare rough script.
12 Practice Discussions and Peer Feedback Students will take turns leading their group in discussions based on their scripts. Post - Finalize script and prepare for class presentation.
13 Discussion Presentations Students will present their group discussions for evaluation. Pre - Practice discussion in groups.
Post - Students may prepare for make-up presentations.
14 Review and Wrap-up / Make-up Presentations Time will be given to those students who require a make-up presentation. Pre- Prepare for make-up presentations if necessary.
