授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary/vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge 3. To develop comprehension skills for reading materials across different genres and topics. 4. To develop effective reading skills & deciphering academic texts (intensive reading, extensive reading, using visual/lexical & grammatical cues in academic texts). 5. To continue to develop reading strategies to read authentic texts/outside readers. 6. To recognize how authors use in-text citations, direct quotations and referencing.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Class will center on one reading per week, together with the associated comprehension and skill-building exercises. The first part of each class will be used for reading and analysis of the text material. This will be followed by reviewing and checking the homework assignments together. Students will also be required to complete the weekly assigned review and practice exercises on the online site (MyELT). As such, students taking this class will require access to the internet. Note that the teaching method, text material covered, and assessment style may change due to the demands of the ongoing health situation. Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class or in a message prior to the first class.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Instructions and weekly assignments will be given and collected on Manaba. Students will be required to complete the assigned reading and homework assignments each week before participating in class. These assignments will be due the day before class on Manaba. MyELT online activities will be due within one week on MyELT.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Grades are based on text assignments and in-class participation (40%), complementary online work (20%), and submitted critical thinking reports (20%), and a final assessment (20%).
