授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase their vocabulary and strategies for grasping meaning of vocabulary in texts 2. To review grammar and cohesive devises 3. To develop basic reading skills and strategies (pre-reading, during reading and after reading strategies) 4. To develop comprehension strategies to understand reading materials without translating them into Japanese 5. To clarify the structure of a paragraph or essay (dependent on the level of the students)
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	授業の前半はTOEFLの練習問題を使って速読の練習を行う。 授業の後半は教科書を使って授業を進める。教科書はイギリス社会についての概論である。内容を把握しながら、一般的な語彙や表現への理解を深めることを目的とする。事前学習用の課題を配布するので、事前にそれに答えてから授業に参加しすること。授業中は課題のフィードバックをしながら進める。
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	授業で取り扱う教材について、事前学習用の課題を配布するので、それに答えてから授業に出席すること。（事前学習１時間が目安） 事後には新しい語彙や表現を整理して、覚えること。（事後学習0.5時間が目安）
