授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
□Content
The purpose of this course is to allow the students to engage in and explore a variety of current issues in society

□Reading & Discussion
・read and evaluate texts in social sciences and humanities
・express one’s opinions about the course topic in a discussion constructively

□Writing & Presentations
・write a research paper on the course topic with appropriate citation (700-1,000 words + bibliography)
・make a visually aided presentation of the paper

/Teaching method and Attention the course
In this class we …
・use Manaba (LMS) for presenting learning materials, collecting assignments, and giving feedback.
・periodically use Zoom or Webex to conduct bi-directional real-time classes.
・provide opportunities of exchanging opinions among students by introducing group work and peer reviews of oral/written products
・aim at higher learning efficiency by utilising learning materials distributed in advance in combination with real-time classes.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
1. The lessons will be conducted live online. You will need to use Zoom and you will need the Zoom app. It will be best if you have a personal computer and are able to connect to wifi. Information for the Zoom online live class will be posted on Manaba. So check the site regularly.
2. Read textbook units or other assigned readings and complete all assignments before beginning of the following class. Students are also expected to work on the research paper throughout the term.

1 Introduction to the course of studies. Setting the agenda and expectations.
2 Family issues. Introduction to the topic. First look at the topic and discussions.
3 Cultural perspective. Family life - worldwide comparisons.
4 Traditional family, marriage and divorce. A first look at the structure of the traditional family.
5 Equality in marriage. LGBTQ+ community and the right to marry and raise children.
6 How to write a research paper. Investigation as to the elements of what makes a first class research paper.
7 Japanese work ethics. Introduction to the topic. Introduction to the concepts.
8 Japanese work practices. How do companies organize their workers.
9 Japanese company culture. In depth analysis of how Japanese companies run and treat their workers.
10 First draft. Peer review. Students to bring in their first draft of their research for peer review.
11 Revised draft. Students to make revision of their research papers.
12 Oral presentations. Group A Students to make and observe oral presentatons.
13 Oral presentations. Group B Another batch of oral presentations.
14 Summary of the course. Final thoughts of the course and a tying together of learning themes.
