授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
Villains in Film: This course will focus on villains and antagonists in film.

The Joker and Batman, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter; heroes are made by the villains they overcome. Antagonists are key to understanding the central themes and conflicts of a film, and great villains are often the most compelling characters in a story.

We will review common villain tropes in literature and film and screen examples from a wide range of genres. Students will discuss and practice analyzing the themes and aesthetics of cinema villains with reference to the specific social and historic contexts that gave rise to some of the most memorable characters in movie history. Major assignments will include a short comparative essay and a final poster presentation.

/Teaching method and Attention the course
Remote learning will include a combination of asynchronous readings, screenings, and assignments, followed by real-time dialogue and activities. Required hardware/software: Zoom, Slack, minimum system requirements to run both; microphone, webcam and headphones/speakers to participate in class meetings.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students prepare short journal entries before class and write responses to the films shown in class. Students write a short critical essay and research and prepare a final presentation.

2 Villain Types We discuss some common movie villain types. Villain Type homework.
3 The Hero’s Journey (Star Wars, Harry Potter) We analyze the role of the villain as central to rise of a hero. Journal Entry.
4 A Reflection of the Times (Dracula, Black Panther) We look at villains as they have changed over time to reflect changing social conditions. Journal Entry.
5 The Villain’s Speech (Skyfall, The Lion King) We watch, analyze, and write villainous monologues. Journal Entry.
6 The Villain’s Motive (The Avengers, Incredibles) We discuss the reasons behind villainy. Journal Entry.
7 First Impressions (Heat, Mean Girls, Terminator 2) We watch, discuss, and develop our own first meetings between hero and villain. Journal Entry.
8 The Look of Villainy We analyze the distinct visual aesthetics of a great villain. Journal Entry.
9 Case Study: Collateral We begin our first long-form screening, Collateral, and discuss the dark mentor figure. Journal Entry.
10 Case Study: The Shawshank Redemption We begin our second long-form screening, The Shawshank Redemption. Journal Entry.

11 The Dark Mentor, the Bully, the Corrupted, the We review Collateral and Shawshank in terms of villain types and the hero’s journey. Journal Entry.
12 Villains as Social Ills (Friday 13th, Cuckoo Nest) Villains as allegory for broader social fears; how those fears make our heroes. Journal Entry.
13 Review: What makes a great villain? How to make a villain sympathetic without making them weak. Journal Entry.
