授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
This course introduces students who have an intermediate level of proficiency in English to the dynamics of
debate. Students can expect to learn how to formulate opinions on issues related to values and opinions,
express their ideas within the format of a debate and refute the argumentation of others.

This class will utilize various online services to help students interact to their fullest.  Students will be
asked to view various online debates, to participate on conferencing sites (Zoom or Google Meet),
and to contribute to our mailing list.



授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This class will be fully conducted  online.  Students are responsible for being present for all online
conferencing (Zoom or Google Meet) as scheduled.  Students will be required complete all homework
which will be discussed on detailed during our online conferencing.   


事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students will need to prepared for our online conferences.  This includes having completed
all assignments, having practiced debating techniques, and having a clear opinion on each
topic.

Students are evaluated according to (1) their participating in group debates (50%), (2) completion of classroom tasks (25%), and (3) preparation for debate (25%).

2 Student introductions: Zoom practice session. Each student will formally introduce their academic aims for the course
3 What is debate? Lecture and Q & A Students present topic and engage in discovery debate
4 Survey on the various kinds of debate with Q & A Topic of debate will conclude with summations
5 Fundamentals of debate & Critical Thinking tasks Topic overview and debate
6 Fundamentals of debate & Critical Thinking tasks Students present topic and engage in debate
7 Focused reading & writing tasks for development Students present topic and engage in developmental debate
8 Arranging arguments for 1st formal debate Topic of debate will conclude with summations
9 Debate 1 (selected groups) & reflection Topic overview and debate
10 Debate 1 execution & reflection Reflecting on strengths and concerns
