授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
The aim of this reading course is to examine different threads and ideas prevalent in Japanese culture.  Threads originating in historical times that are still present, if even in a hybrid form, will be the main focus. Some such threads may include harmony, respect, mindfulness, concepts of religion as well as others.
Materials used will come from translations of original works as well as journal and academic writings.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
This course will be in English and active /  “Learner-centered” in nature.  Students will be expected to work in pairs and groups to complete tasks, and active participation in discussions will be essential.  Students will be required to write reflection papers and take quizzes intermittently throughout the semester.

/Before After Study
1 Course introduction Students will discuss themes  / threads found in Japanese culture. Students will write a short paragraph on one of the themes discussed in class.
2 Reading 1: Overview and Discussion Students will examine  issues with Japanese culture and society. Students will complete worksheets for review.
3 Reading 1: Discussion and Reflection Students will examine what it means to be a Japanese in today's world.   Students will write reflection essays regarding the reading.
4 Reading 2: Overview and Discussion Students will examine Japanese society and how it is presented to the West. Students will complete worksheets for review.
5 Reading 2: Discussion Based on the readings, groups will work on questionnaires to clarify their readings. Students will conduct questionnaires among their friends.
6 Reading 2:  Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss and present their findings in their groups based on the readings in class. Students will prepare for presentations for the next week.
7 Mid-term presentations Group presentations will be given about Japanese society based on topics of students choice. Students will write reflection papers regarding their presentations.
8 Reading 3:  Overview and Discussion Japanese religious ideas will be the focus of this reading. Students will complete worksheets for review.
9 Reading 3: Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss main ideas in the reading and work on expressing opinions about the reading. Students will write reflection papers regarding their ideas about the reading.
10 Reading 4: Overview and Discussion Students will read an article about Japanese attitudes towards sports. Students will complete worksheets for review.
11 Reading 4: Discussion and Reflection Students will discuss Japanese attitudes towards sports with an emphasis on the Olympics. Students will write reflection papers about Japanese attitudes towards sports.
12 Final Presentations / Discussions Students will give individual or group presentations on a topic covered in the first term. Students will begin to work in groups to prepare for their final presentation.
13 No scheduled class Review of ideas and topics covered in class Preparation of paper for submission
14 No scheduled class Review of ideas and topics covered in class. Students will review the vocabulary and ideas presented in the first term.
