授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to give students a solid understanding of how to write a well-structured paragraph through a variety of academic-style writing tasks. The students will be taught several strategies to generate and organize their writing ideas. Emphasis will be placed on composition, organization, and content of writing, however, some grammar and vocabulary building will also be covered.

Overall Objectives
1. To teach how to write a well-structured paragraph.
2. To help students write about their own ideas and experiences.
3. To teach the skills necessary for students to revise their work effectively.
4. To increase student computer literacy skills.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
Because of Covid-19, we will teach this semester online. I will distribute materials and accept assignments via the porta II site.
I plan to host zoom lessons at the regularly scheduled time. We will start the class as a group, and then divide into groups via "breakout rooms".
For students who do not have access to a reliable internet connection, they can do the entire course using the written resources available.

Before class, students are required to read text and handouts assigned. After class, students are required to do all homework tasks set (brainstorming, writing drafts, doing exercises, etc.).

1 Intro - Opinion Paragraph / Recognizing Factors Class policy and course outline. What are factors and how can they can be used to express opinions? Post - Read handouts
2 The Topic Sentence We will discuss what a topic sentence is and practice evaluating and writing our own. Post - Read handouts. Write a topic sentence.
3 Paragraph Overview / Concluding Sentence We will discuss the parts of a paragraph. We will  practice writing a concluding sentence. Post - Read handouts. Write a first draft of a paragraph.
4 Revising / Writing Workshop Students will share their paragraphs with their peers and teacher for feedback and advice. Post - Write final draft of paragraph.
5 Descriptive Paragraph / Sense Detail We will discuss the requirements for the next assignment. We will practice writing with sense detail Post - Read handouts.
6 Cutting and Adding Detail / Mind Map Students will learn how to use a mind map to plan their writing. Post - Read handouts. Make a mind map.
7 Concluding Sentences / Since and Because We will discuss how to increase sentence variety by using since and because. Post - Write a first draft of a paragraph.
8 Revising /Writing Workshop Students will share their paragraphs with their peers and teacher for feedback and advice. Post - Write final draft of paragraph.
9 Narrative Paragraph / Spider Map We will discuss the requirements for the next assignment and how to use a spider map. Post - Read handouts and make a spider map of paragraph.
10 Analyzing a Topic Sentence / Present Perfect We will practice giving background information by using the present perfect. Post - Read handouts and write a topic sentence.
11 Concluding a Narrative / Demonstratives We will discuss how to conclude a narrative paragraph to tell a life lesson. Post - Read handouts and write a first draft of the paragraph.
12 Revising/Writing Workshop Students will share their paragraphs with their peers and teacher for feedback and advice. Post - Write final draft of the paragraph.
