授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This course will focus on the history and culture of Japanese art with emphasis on Edo-period painting. To accommodate each lecture, and to aid students in gaining an understanding of the principal styles and characteristics of paintings, numerous slides will be shown featuring examples of representative works. Supplemental readings and associated exercises will be provided to ensure comprehension of specialized terms and to facilitate an understanding of historical and cultural context. By the completion of the course, students will be able to identify and distinguish principal painting styles and their features and to convey this understanding in an articulate and informed manner.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Classes will be held entirely online, with PowerPoint-assisted lectures delivered live (real-time) via Zoom during the regularly-scheduled class hours (Tuesdays, 4th period). Live (English) captioning of the (English-language) lectures will be provided. Some content will be presented through film, and will be made available for download and/or streaming.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Evaluations will be based on participation (10%), the completion of homework assignments (15%), achievement on quizzes (30%) and on a final essay and test (45%).
