授業の目的・内容
/Course Objectives
The goal in the Writing Skills III course is to develop students’ writing and critical thinking abilities in English, progressing from production of shorter to longer academic texts, and from writing on familiar topics to writing about more complex and academic ones.
Overall Objectives
1. To provide an overview of what constitutes a ‘good’ essay
2. To help students understand various patterns of essay organization
3. To help students plan essays
4. To help students revise and edit their essays
5. To help students use a variety of sources
6. To help students develop computer literacy skills
7. To introduce the basics of referencing and creating a bibliography (MLA or APA styles)
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
In a regular class setting, students would usually work in groups of four and carry out group discussions in English related to problem-solving and planning activities about the writing process. Wherever possible, this kind of class activity will continue online through Zoom or similar interactive software. Class and homework assignments will be given real-time on Zoom or through the PorTa II system.
事前・事後学修の内容
/Before After Study
Students should review all materials and exercises that are practiced during class time and try to use what they learned in their writing in future classes and assignments. Students are also encouraged to work with a writing journal to summarize and review weekly class-work and vocabulary.

評価方法
/Evaluation
Mid-term essay (25%). Final term essay (25%). Active contribution to class activities which will include completing reading and real-time on-line discussion tasks, in English, related to the development of writing skills: 25%. Timely completion and submission of homework tasks and weekly assignments: 25%. Students should be prepared to spend at least 90 minutes preparing for/reviewing classes.

2 Introduction to planning strategies for writing. Brainstorming/mind-mapping and quick writing.
3 The paragraph: Topic & supporting sentences. Looking at the function of the topic sentence.
Topic sentence writing practice.
4 Understanding the Thesis Statement. How the Thesis Statement functions in an introduction and connects to paragraphs.
5 Planning for mid-term assignment. Group discussion (online) and planning ideas for mid-term assignment.
6 Mid-term assignment submission and peer review. Guided peer review and reading each other's work.
7 Essay feedback and individual advice. Return of individual mid-term assignments with individual comments and on-line feedback..
8 The Thesis Statement and paragraph order. How the Thesis Statement links to the topic sentences of paragraphs.
9 Final essay topics: Planning and discussion. Choosing topics for final essay submission and planning/mind-mapping (online activity).
10 Draft essay submission Choosing topics for final essay submission and planning/mind-mapping (online activity).
11 Draft essay feedback. Individual feedback and advice. Draft review.
12 Final essay submission Class and individual essay comments and course feedback writing assignment.
