授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students. Overall Objectives 1．To increase their vocabulary 2．To review grammar 3．To develop basic reading skills & strategies 4．To understand how various texts are organized
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Online classes. - Varuiys reading strategies are introduced and practiced in and outside of class   throughou the course. - One main concentration is on classifying information into major points (outline)   and additional details and on understanding the streamline of the passage, while   simply enjoying the contents themselves. - Form/accuracy (vocabulary, collocations, grammar, expressions) is also pursued. - Peer discussions and solo oral outlining are regularly practiced.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students are expected to come to class, having completed their weekly assignments including reading, doing exercises, and researching on relevant topics.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	- Participation (Preps, In-class performance): 20%; Quizzes/Assignments: 40%; and   Unit tests 40%. - Minimum attendance rate of approx. 70% is required for credit/grade evaluation.
