授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase their vocabulary and strategies for grasping meaning of vocabulary in texts 2. To review grammar and cohesive devises 3. To develop basic reading skills and strategies (pre-reading, during reading and after reading strategies) 4. To develop comprehension strategies to understand reading materials without translating them into Japanese 5. To clarify the structure of a paragraph or essay (dependent on the level of the students)
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Classes are given online (zoom) - Various reading strategies are introduced and practiced in and out of class. - One main concentration is on classifying information into major points (outline)   and additional details and on understanding the streamline of the passage, while   simply enjoying the contents themselves. - Form/accuracy (vocabulary, collocations, grammar, expressions) is also pursued. - Peer discussions and solo oral outlining are regularly practiced.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students are expected to come onto live-classes, having completed their weekly assignments including reading, doing exercises, and researching on relevant topics.
