授業の目的・内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of　vocabulary/vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge 3. To develop comprehension skills for reading materials across different genres and topics. 4. To develop effective reading skills & deciphering academic texts (intensive reading,　extensive　reading, using visual/lexical & grammatical cues in academic texts). 5. To continue to develop reading strategies to read authentic texts/outside readers. 6. To recognize how authors use in-text citations, direct quotations and referencing.
授業の形式・方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	Each class will center on one reading per week, together with the associated comprehension and skill-building exercises, from both the textbook and the online site (MyELT). Instructions will be given on Porta II, class will take place in real-time on a videoconferencing program (Zoom), and complementary exercises will be completed on MyELT. Students taking this class will require access to a computer (PC, tablet, smartphone) and a reliable internet connection.
事前・事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Instructions and weekly assignments will be given and collected on Porta II. Students will be required to complete the assigned reading and homework assignments each week before participating in class. These assignments will be due the day before class (Tuesday @ 11:59 pm) on Porta II. MyELT online activities are due at the end of that class day (Wednesday @ 11:59 pm) on MyELT.

評価方法 ／Evaluation	Grades are based on text assignments and in-class participation (40%), complementary online work (40%), and submitted critical thinking reports (20%).
