Prospective Students

The Special Entrance Examination

Purpose

The Special Entrance Examination for Foreign Students is an entrance examination for persons of non-Japanese nationality (but including students with Japanese nationality who are repatriates from China, etc.) who studied at an educational institution under a non-Japanese system and who wish to enroll in Dokkyo University with the objective of graduating from Dokkyo University.

To foreign students wishing to enroll in the Faculty of Foreign Languages (About the Faculty)

The teaching of foreign languages and other subjects in the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Dokkyo University is conducted in Japanese and geared toward students who have studied at educational institutions in Japan. Accordingly, given the university’s curriculum, the university considers it impracticable for a person without sufficient Japanese language ability to start learning a new foreign language (English, German, or French) from the basics through the medium of a language (i.e. Japanese) that is not their native language after enrolling in the university. For this reason, examination preconditions by department have been established for students wishing to enroll in the Faculty of Foreign Languages.

Department Examination preconditions
German The student must have studied German as his or her primary foreign language for at least three years before enrolling in the university. If the student is to start learning German from the basics, his or her Japanese and English abilities must be particularly advanced.
English The student must have studied English as his or her primary foreign language for about six years before enrolling in the university.
French The student must have studied French as his or her primary foreign language for at least three years before enrolling in the university. If the student is to start learning French from the basics, his or her Japanese and English abilities must be particularly advanced.
Tourism and Transnational Studies The student must have studied English as his or her primary foreign language for about six years before enrolling in the university.

Ordinary entrance examination

Persons who do not have Japanese nationality but who graduated from an educational institution based on the Japanese educational system or graduated from a Japan-related educational institution outside Japan need not take the special courses for foreign students after enrolling in the university. Accordingly, these persons should take the ordinary entrance examination instead of the special entrance examination.

September enrollment system for foreign students

Purpose

The September enrollment system for foreign students is a system for persons for whom the normal entrance system in Japanese is unsuitable―that is, persons who have not studied Japanese or who have insufficient Japanese abilities, who have studied at an educational institution under a non-Japanese system, who have a non-Japanese nationality and live outside Japan, and who have the volition and ability to study at a Japanese university.

To foreign students wishing to enroll in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of International Liberal Arts.

Foreign students with no knowledge of Japanese may apply for admission to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of International Liberal Arts. However, since all courses taught in the Faculty of International Liberal Arts, from basic to specialized subjects, are conducted in Japanese and geared toward students who have studied at Japanese educational institutions, foreign students with limited language proficiency are required to take intensive Japanese language courses during the first two years. They will be expected to obtain sufficient Japanese to cope with the academic requirements of the university. Accordingly, students must meet both the academic and financial requirements of the university.

The September enrollment system for foreign students offered by the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of International Liberal Arts is the system under which fulfillment of these requirements will be determined through a document review. Only students who pass selection under this system will be issued an acceptance letter as a September enrollment student in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of International Liberal Arts. However, students who cannot obtain resident eligibility and a visa prior to the enrollment ceremony may lose acceptance into Dokkyo University.
