The Undergraduate School
For the education of people who will be needed in the future..
Dokkyo University has four Faculties and ten Departments. It is a comprehensive university that also has graduate schools and a law school. All of these are based on the foundation of "obtaining foreign language skills and acquiring a liberal education that can be used globally," and also on the unique curriculums of each department.
Faculty of Foreign Languages
Learning foreign languages, while grasping and understanding their cultural background.
In foreign language education, simply learning language skills, and being able to use foreign languages, will not achieve one´s objective. At the Faculty of Foreign Languages, we consider that it is important to have cross-cultural experiences and enjoy a world that is expanded by languages, as well as learning foreign languages and being able to successfully use them at a practical level. In order to grasp and gain an understanding of underlying perspectives and ways of thinking of the peoples who speak German, English, and French, our curriculum has been designed to give students a broad knowledge of the target linguistic areas, from politics and economics to history and literature. In addition, as supportive education, we have prepared classes for the nurturing of the information literacy that is desirable for students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, and the nurturing of a comprehensive and multi-dimensional point of view that spans specialized areas. In this way, we aim to train human resources that are able to make comprehensive decisions suitable to the new era.
Department of German
One of the largest in Japan. By analyzing the culture, history, and society of the German linguistic areas that mainly includes European communities, we aim to acquire more practical German language skills.
Germany is the center of politics and economics in the European Union. There are approximately 100 million people who speak German as their first language, which is the largest in Europe. And now that the EU is expanding to the East, the importance of German is rapidly increasing. The Department of German aims to train students to gain conversation skills in German, as well as comprehensive linguistic ability such as being able to read technical literature and have discussions. These high-quality classes are made possible by one of the most successful teams of professors in Japan. Through lecture and seminar courses given by native speakers and Japanese instructors, students are able to obtain information about Germany, other German-speaking countries, and the EU, and also use this information as a foundation to gain the ability to properly analyze and grasp the world.
Department of English
Common language of the global society. Through English, we pursue the culture and world of English-speaking countries.
Students who study Japanese in overseas universities are not simply motivated by wanting to be able to speak Japanese. They are first interested in areas such as Japanese politics, economy, and culture, and in order to learn them they study Japanese. This holds true for the educational content of this Department. The educational goal of the Department of English is to acquire enough skills and knowledge to be able to participate in communication in English, and to deepen the knowledge of each student´s specialized field in order to utilize the acquired skills and knowledge. We aim to develop human resources that can understand specialized content in English, have the ability to engage in discussions, make speeches, and hold debates, and play important roles in international society.
Department of French
The largest number of teaching staff in the nation, covering wide areas of expertise.
Acquire high French language skills and in-depth knowledge of French-speaking countries.
French has been spoken all over Europe from the Middle Ages to the modern age, and is used as a communication tool in upper-class society. Even now, it is used in Switzerland, Belgium, the Province of Quebec in Canada, African nations that were once colonies of France, and of course France itself. As it has also been adopted as an official language of the United Nations, French is one of the most important languages in international society. In this Department, we aim to develop human resources that have acquired the French language, as well as knowledge of French-speaking countries in a variety of fields, including history, literature, culture and art, and play important roles in international society.
Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies
Established in 2009 to foster cross-cultural understanding and to advance foreign language competence.
The mission of Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies is to promote the understanding of human diversity looking particularly at the mobility of people in the twenty first century. As national boundaries around the world continue to become less defined, and as the movement of peoples around the world increases, the student of today is clearly in a position to benefit from a serious investigation into the study of tourism which is our pedagogical springboard. As the newest department in the Faculty of Foreign Languages, we aim to provide an exciting environment for students to learn about the world through transnational and tourism studies, and to advance their fluency in English as well as one other foreign language based on the well-established paradigm for excellence in foreign language instruction here within this faculty. Through an array of interdisciplinary studies, it is ultimately the goal of this department to help students think about how people of different backgrounds can cohabit the earth peacefully while retaining cultural diversity.
